FAQs about Graphic Design

1. What is graphic design?

2. What products are typically offered by a graphic designer?

3.What should I expect to pay?

4. How do I select the best graphic designer?

5. What about deadlines?

1. The use of graphic elements and text to communicate an idea or concept. The branch of visual arts concerned with the aesthetics and production of layout, design and typography.

2.Typical products and services are logos, web sites, CD covers, CD sleeves, stationery, photography, letterheads, envelopes, business cards, CD-Rom design, newsletters, vehicle livery, bulletins, template designs, promotional products, graphics preparation such as T-shirts, posters, pens, mugs, signs, key chains, interactive cds, presentations, custom web graphics, photo editing, digital art, printing advertising, design, posters, tee-shirt designs, image scanning, e-commerce product photography, media buying and planning, brochure design, logo design, illustration, corporate web design, small business web design, search engine optimization, SEO,web hosting web application development, e-commerce e-newsletters, printing, graphics for web sites, direct mail design, marketing, stationery, including business card, letterhead, envelope, mailing label, and presentation folder design. ClassicGraphix artists may produce many of these; you need to look at the individual artists, or email a general query.

Prices vary immensely. For graphic design artwork you should pay around about £28 per hour upwards. Designers with a high calibre professional portfolio may ask for figures such as £50 per hour. VAT may be chargeable on this rate. You need to be certain that you have the graphic designer who fits within your budget and your creative expectations.
Your designer should be able to tell you how much each element of your project should cost, although many will cover themselves by using an estimate rather than a quote, where actual creative artwork is required. Your graphic designer should tell you if your project is going to exceed the estimate by any great degree before payment becomes due.

Always ask to see examples of graphic design of the type that interests you. For a large project, you could ask for references from your designer.

Graphic design services will usually not take responsibility for missed deadlines, and will ask you to sign to that effect, even though artists are mindful of schedules due to the very nature of their work, and will usually do their best to make sure a customer isn't disappointed. The answer? Try not to weigh your graphic designer down with tight deadlines. By all means, give them a deadline - but make sure the real deadline is two or three weeks' beyond that!
